New Years Eve- Starting 2011 Off Safe!

1. If you are throwing a party, set the rules beforehand. The rules will depend on you and your household.

2. Set a limit as to how much alcohol is allowed.

3. Be sure everyone who is driving has a designated driver. If they do not have one, there are three choices:

A. Ask if anyone can take he or she home.

B. Allow them to spend the night.

C. Call them a taxi. There are many taxi services that offer free transportation on New Years Eve.

4. Do not be afraid to take the car keys of anyone who is too intoxicated. 

5. If you are using New Years decorations, be sure to keep fire safety in mind. Do not plug in too many items into one outlet and be sure to keep paper and water away from all cords and electrical products.

6. If you are going out with a group of people to a crowded area to celebrate, make a list of everyone who will be attending. Do not be afraid to "call role" if you do not think everyone is present and accounted for.

7. Some New Years Eve events, especially a fireworks show, can become pretty crowded. Be sure to keep everyone together, especially children. If you have to, pick your child up or hold his or her hand. Even if they protest, do this anyways. It is a crowded area at night, and you want to keep everyone safe.

8. Drive defensively. This will keep you safe and accident free.
